a month ago today in china - september 10

The fourth of a series of 12 or so intended installments of pictures, detailed adventure - continues here. [Only a FEW captions on noteworthy pictures in this one - most are relatively self explanatory]

Day 4
Yueyang:
Today, visit an elementary school sponsored by Viking River Cruises in this rural area. You will be warmly greeted by the children and enjoy a performance. Return to your ship for meals and scenic cruising.

Today was exactly as planned in the itinerary. The only thing more that I can say about it was that Yueyang is a subtropical climate, and we have never been so hot a temperature (except for maybe in Las Vegas - but that's a dry heat). The poor school children we visited must have thought we were freaks of nature, sweating profusely as we were - literally wringing wet - while they didn't so much as break a sweat.

Additionally, I can tell you that this area of China is very very poor - a strong contrast here between Yueyang and Shanghai.

(they would take such delight when I attempted to speak to them in Chinese . . . the looks of shock were classic)

I think that this was a good opportunity to offer tourists a taste of local life (as well as give the tourists a way to help support a poor school educate children . . . mixed feelings about this part because this isn't really why we came to China).

A few photos of the drive to/from the school . . .

Qi Pao, other Photos of the Ship

Once back at the ship, Sharon decided that she'd like to buy a Qi Pao . . . which was custom tailored for her.

Here are some other general pictures we took around the ship . . .

Captain's Dinner . . .
